Itinerary
Day 1: Travel to Ghuttu
Our day begins early from Dehradun to Guttu. We meet at 7 a.m. to begin our long drive to Guttu, an agricultural community in Uttarakhand’s Tehri district. Although today is only about the 6-hour travel and mountain air, leaving early is best for two reasons:
One is to arrive early and rest for the next day. Two, mountain roads are uncertain, so we should plan for delays. Reaching before dusk is also better.
Guttu is a large village with beautiful green mountainsides cut out perfectly in geographical shapes for farming, its primary industry. We cross the world’s tallest dam, the Tehri Dam, on the Bhagirathi River to reach this village 30 miles from Ghansali.
Day 2: Ghuttu (1,635M) to Gaurmanda (2,525M)
The first day of the hike was really difficult as we gained 900M of height in 7-8 km. The dense Oak and Rhododendron forests let you forget the lengthy drive today. A nice trek through colourful forests over a steady slope gets us to our campsite at 2,525M in the centre of the jungle.
The track is wide and steadily climbs through the forest, offering a distant view of high-altitude settlements and verdant fields.
Day 3: Gaurmanda (2,525M) to Panwali Top (3,400M) via Pobhari (2,945M)
Today is just as long as yesterday, with just as much elevation gain as Panwali Top, the highest point of the hike, which has stunning views of the surrounding mountains. It climbs gradually through the woodland to Pobhari at 2,945M. From Dophand, the trail flattens for 2 km, and the forest opens up to reveal the valley and mountains. Today’s final 300M rise is tough and persistent.
Our campsite is 165M down at 3,235M. With shepherd houses on one side, today’s campsite borders the jungle. It may be really cold here after the sun sets. The route needs more water. Bring enough water from the campsite for the day.
Day 4: Panwali Top (3,400M) to Gaurmanda (2,525M)
Today, we return to the top early in the morning when the skies are clear and the entire mountain range, the trek’s highlight, comes into view as the sun illuminates the highest peak, casting a deep golden crown over their heads. We return through the thick oak and rhododendron jungles to our campground, our old buddy Gaurmanda, after some time on top!
Day 5: Gaurmanda (2,525M) to Dehradun (650M) via Ghuttu (1,635M)
On the last day of the walk, we returned the same way to Guttu, collected our bags, and waited for our journey to Dehradun. Expect late evening Dehradun’s arrival.
